Report on the "Plain Japanese Course Application (1)" for Japan employees

Since July 2024, JAC has been holding the "Plain Japanese Course" as a seminar for Japan employees.
As the number of foreigners living in Japan increases and nationalities diversify, why not use "Plain Japanese" to communicate rather than translating or interpreting into a foreign language that you are not good at?

Speak with the iron rule of Plain Japanese, the "law of scissors"!

"Plain Japanese Course Application (1)" was held. This course was taught by Yoriko Shiraishi of ORJ Co., Ltd.
At the beginning, starting with the review of the previous basic section, we reviewed the "law of scissors".

The "rule of scissors" is

  • Be clear (avoid vague expressions and use simple words)
  • To the very end (don't omit anything, don't expect people to read your mind)
  • Cut it short (remove unnecessary information and shorten sentences)

That means speaking.

So, we start with a review of last time.
No matter which course you join, you will never have trouble keeping up with the content, so please feel free to join even the advanced level.

Practice giving instructions in a variety of situations!

Starting this time, we introduced a new method of providing examples and asking participants to write in the chat what they would actually say when giving instructions.
By doing this, the course became more practical and applicable rather than just listening to a lecture.

for example···

There will be a safety inspection tomorrow, and Manager Yamada will be coming at 3 o'clock.
Keep the workplace tidy.

How would you make it "Plain Japanese"?

There is no right answer. For example, there are the following instructions to make it easier for foreigners to understand.

Now (when will it be done)
Keep the work site tidy. (What to do)
The reason is that there is a safety inspection tomorrow. (Reason)

There are ways to give instructions such as:
*In order to simplify things and remove unnecessary information, we will not mention "Section Manager Yamada."

There are many other examples, which I will post in the chat as they come up.
Many people were actually thinking about it and putting it into words. I personally felt that it was surprisingly difficult to give instructions when you actually put it into words on the spot, rather than trying to do it later. The writings of other participants were also very helpful.

The chat format for this training session was initiated in response to feedback from first-time participants that they would like a course that is closer to practical application.

The "Plain Japanese Course" is a "Foreign Symbiosis Course" for Japan employees, and is developed as a practical course with cross-cultural understanding.
